Law students from across the Middle East were brought together recently for the Second Annual Willem C. Vis Middle East International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot in Muscat, Oman, offering the opportunity to practice their law training in simulated legal proceedings.
Organized by the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR-AAA), the U.S. Department of Commerce Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP), and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Center for International Legal Education (CILE), the Vis Middle East Pre-Moot saw participation from teams including the University of Baghdad, University of Bahrain, University of Jordan, Qatar University, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, the Faculty of Legal, Political and Social Sciences of Tunis, and the United Arab Emirates University.
Among the seven universities, Professor Mohammad Yousef Zu’ubi, Dean of Law faculty University of Bahrain, Professor Rashid Hamed Al-Baloushi Assistant Dean for University Study Collage of Law – Sultan Qaboos University, Professor Jamel Abraheem Al Haidary, Dean of Faculty of Law Baghdad University, and Professors from all the particiating univesrities.
The Vis Middle East Pre-Moot, which took place from 25-29 February 2012, included two days of oral argument training for the seven teams. The Pre-Moot included preliminary rounds, semi-finals and finals, all arbitrated by practitioners from the local, regional and international legal community. Awards were given for the following categories:
